Why it is called that
Thumb out. Dog down? Never.
The name comes from the loop. It is cut just large enough for your thumb — never your whole wrist — so you handle the leash with a light thumb grip and your hand stays free. If a dog lunges or tries to drag you, you lift your thumb out and the leash slips away in an instant: no loop caught on your wrist, nothing pulling you off your feet. The dog learns that pulling simply costs it the handle, and you stay balanced enough to teach the correction instead of losing your temper with it.
